- RP with `save_role_certainty >= 70` and team has a projected lead → START in RP or P.

**Step 3.1 — Compute cat state.** Say:

**Step 3.2 — Compute leverage weights.** Say:
"I will now use the `category-allocation-best-response` skill to compute `leverage_weights[cat]` given our cat state and this week's opponent profile — I will consume these as HARD CONSTRAINTS per game-theory principle #1 (dominated-strategy elimination) and principle #5 (matchup-contingent construction)."
Invoke `category-allocation-best-response`. Provide the skill with the Phase 3.1 cat state, the opponent's archetype and best-response hints from the profile file, and the league-config `cat_win_threshold = 6`. The skill returns:
- `leverage[cat]` — 0 if cat is in our hard-punt set (dominated this week); 1.5 if contested (`0.3 < win_prob < 0.7`); 1.0 otherwise.
- `hard_punt_cats` — an explicit list of cats where we spend zero roster resources this week.
- `must_push_cats` — cats where leverage is maximal.
**How to use the output (primary driver, not a tiebreaker):**
- If SV is in `hard_punt_cats`, no pure-SV reliever starts. The RP/P slot goes to a hitter eligible there or stays empty in favor of a contested-cat contribution elsewhere.
- If QS is in `hard_punt_cats`, do not start a streamable SP whose value comes from QS — consider leaving the slot empty.
- `leverage[cat] = 1.5` means any player contributing to that cat gets a 50% tiebreaker bonus; `leverage[cat] = 0` zeroes their contribution to that cat entirely.
- If two hitters have daily_quality within 3 points of each other and one has materially higher projected contribution to a `must_push_cat`, always prefer them.
The Phase 5 objective function becomes `Σ (daily_quality × leverage × variance_multiplier)` where variance_multiplier comes from Phase 4.

**Step 4.0 — Pick the variance posture.** Say:

The skill returns:
- `variance_posture` — `seek` (underdog, <0.40 win prob), `neutral` (0.40–0.60), or `minimize` (favorite, >0.60).
- `variance_multiplier` — a scalar in `[0.70, 1.40]` that Phase 5 multiplies against each player's boom-bust delta.
**How to use the output:**
- `seek` posture: prefer high-variance options in flex slots — high-K/high-HR boom-bust hitters over steady contact bats; volatile SPs with upside over stable #4 starters.
- `minimize` posture: prefer low-variance options — high-contact hitters, stable ratios pitchers.
- `neutral` posture: no variance tilt; maximize raw `daily_quality × leverage` only.
**Step 4.1 — Build candidate lineups.** For each of the 15 active slots, list every rostered player eligible for that slot (position eligibility per Yahoo rules: 5 starts OR 10 games in prior season, or same thresholds in-season). A player eligible at multiple positions appears in multiple candidate pools.

**Slot-filling order matters.** Fill in this sequence:
1. **Lock single-eligibility slots first** (C, SS often only have one real candidate).
2. **Fill multi-eligibility slots next** (1B/OF/Util) with whoever is left after step 1.
3. **Pitcher slots last** — SP first, then RP, then flex P. Remember: it is valid to leave a P slot empty. If `hard_punt_cats` from Phase 3 includes SV, every RP whose only contribution is saves is a mandatory bench (or drop) regardless of role certainty.

### Step 5.2 — Critic (Benching's Case)
Say: "I will now use the `deliberation-debate-red-teaming` skill to red-team starting [player] at [slot] today."
The critic prior: "For each roster player, red-team starting them today. Surface matchup risks, regression flags, injury/rest risk."
The skill builds the strongest possible case *against*: elite opposing SP, pitcher-friendly park, weak lineup slot, BABIP-inflated recent stats, injury whispers, weather washout risk, better bench alternative. Record the top three risks.
### Step 5.3 — Dialectical synthesis
For each slot, combine advocate and critic into a synthesis decision per `CLAUDE.md` Rule 3. The synthesis maximizes `daily_quality × leverage × variance_multiplier` from Phases 3–4 — raw `daily_quality` is never the sole criterion. If a candidate's only contribution is to a `hard_punt_cat`, that slot pivots to a contested-cat contributor even when `daily_quality` would prefer the punt-cat player. The confidence bands from `variant-catalog.md`:

**Synthesis hard constraints (these BIND — they override the advocate's upside story).** Per the audit (`yahoo-mlb/signals/2026-06-02-orchestration-audit-report.md`), the cleanest losses came from synthesis overriding a correct critic on a pitcher activation (Ashby Wk9) or a final-day availability call (Peña Wk10/11). These are hard rules, not tiebreakers:
1. **Ratio-defense lock.** When defending an ERA or WHIP lead (the cat is currently won or tied-favorable), a critic BENCH/PROTECT call on a pitcher activation is **binding**. Override ONLY with a logged forfeit-risk exception (e.g., the 30-IP weekly minimum — the validated Wk10 Pérez case). Never activate a marginal-ratio arm into a defended lead on "asymmetric upside," "sunk FAAB cost," or "hot form."

## Collaboration Principles
**Rule 1: Web-search everything (no API).**
Every player stat, injury note, probable pitcher, park factor, and weather call must come from a live web search with the source URL cited in the signal file. If a fact cannot be verified, mark `confidence: low` and surface the gap in the red-team pass. Never fabricate stats.
**Rule 2: Read signals, do not recompute them.**
If `signals/YYYY-MM-DD-player-caminero.md` already exists from an earlier invocation today, read it. Do not re-invoke `mlb-player-analyzer`. Each signal is computed once per run per player and then consumed downstream.
**Rule 3: Run both variants, every time.**
The advocate variant steelmans. The critic variant red-teams. Never skip the critic when the advocate case looks strong — that is precisely when the red-team is most valuable. Dissent gets recorded, not suppressed.
**Rule 4: Stay on the action ladder.**
Every slot output ends in `START [player]` or `SIT [player]`. For P slots, the verbs are `START [pitcher]` or `LEAVE EMPTY`. Never output "consider," "lean toward," or "think about."
**Rule 5: Write for a beginner.**
The user has zero baseball knowledge. Every user-facing sentence translates jargon inline or avoids it. "Junior Caminero has a good matchup (the other team's pitcher throws right-handed, and Caminero is better against right-handed pitching)." Not: "Caminero has positive platoon splits vs RHP."
**Rule 6: Log every decision.**

**Rule 7: Flag when a different agent is more appropriate.**
