# Monitor Whale Activity
Real-time monitoring system for tracking large cryptocurrency transactions (whales) across multiple blockchains. Detects significant wallet movements, analyzes market impact, and provides automated alerts through multiple channels (Slack, Discord, Telegram, email).
**Supports**: Ethereum, Bitcoin, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Solana
## When to Use This Command
Use `/monitor-whales` when you need to:
- Track large transactions that could impact market prices (typically >$1M USD)
- Monitor whale wallet accumulation/distribution patterns
- Receive real-time alerts for significant on-chain movements
- Analyze exchange inflows/outflows for market sentiment
- Identify potential market manipulation or coordinated movements
- Track smart money movements for trading signals
- Monitor specific whale addresses of interest
- Detect unusual transaction patterns before price movements
**DON'T use this command for:**
- Small retail transactions (<$100K USD) - Creates noise
- Historical analysis - Use `/analyze-chain` instead
- Portfolio tracking - Use `/track-wallet` instead
- Price predictions - Use `/generate-signal` instead
- Tax calculations - Use `/calculate-tax` instead
## Design Decisions
**Why Multiple Blockchain Support?**
Whales operate across multiple chains. Cross-chain tracking provides complete picture of institutional movements and arbitrage activities.
**Why Real-Time vs Batch Processing?**
- **Real-time chosen**: Market impact occurs within seconds of large transactions
- **Batch rejected**: 15-minute delays make alerts useless for trading
**Why Threshold-Based Filtering?**
- **Threshold chosen**: Configurable minimums ($100K-$10M) reduce noise
- **All transactions rejected**: Would generate 100,000+ alerts/day
**Why Multi-Channel Alerting?**
- **Multi-channel chosen**: Different traders prefer different platforms
- **Email-only rejected**: Not suitable for time-sensitive trading alerts
**Why Market Impact Scoring?**
- **Scoring chosen**: Quantifies potential price movement (0-100 scale)
- **Binary alerts rejected**: Traders need severity assessment
## Prerequisites
Before running this command, ensure you have:
1. **Blockchain Node Access** (choose one per chain):
- Infura API key (Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrage)
- Alchemy API key (Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Solana)
- QuickNode endpoint (all chains)
- Self-hosted nodes (advanced)
2. **Price Data API**:
- CoinGecko API key (free tier: 50 calls/min)
- CoinMarketCap API key (recommended for real-time)
- DEX price aggregator (1inch, 0x)
3. **Alert Delivery Services** (at least one):
- Slack webhook URL
- Discord webhook URL
- Telegram bot token + chat ID
- SendGrid API key (email alerts)
- Twilio credentials (SMS alerts, optional)
4. **Database** (for historical tracking):
- PostgreSQL 13+ (recommended)
- MongoDB 5+ (alternative)
- TimescaleDB (for time-series optimization)
5. **Infrastructure**:
- Linux server (Ubuntu 20.04+) or Docker
- 4GB RAM minimum (8GB for multi-chain)
- 100GB storage (30 days history)
- Webhook endpoint for alerts (optional)
## Implementation Process
### Step 1: Configure Blockchain Connections
Create `config/chains.json`:
```json
{
"ethereum": {
"rpc_url": "https://eth-mainnet.g.alchemy.com/v2/YOUR_KEY",
"websocket_url": "wss://eth-mainnet.g.alchemy.com/v2/YOUR_KEY",
"whale_threshold_usd": 1000000,
"native_symbol": "ETH",
"block_time": 12
},
"bsc": {
"rpc_url": "https://bsc-dataseed.binance.org/",
"websocket_url": "wss://bsc-ws-node.nariox.org:443",
"whale_threshold_usd": 500000,
"native_symbol": "BNB",
"block_time": 3
},
"solana": {
"rpc_url": "https://solana-mainnet.g.alchemy.com/v2/YOUR_KEY",
"websocket_url": "wss://solana-mainnet.g.alchemy.com/v2/YOUR_KEY",
"whale_threshold_usd": 250000,
"native_symbol": "SOL",
"block_time": 0.4
}
}
```
### Step 2: Set Up Alert Channels
Create `config/alerts.json`:
```json
{
"channels": {
"slack": {
"enabled": true,
"webhook_url": "https://hooks.slack.com/services/YOUR/WEBHOOK/URL",
"channel": "#whale-alerts",
"min_severity": 50
},
"discord": {
"enabled": true,
"webhook_url": "https://discord.com/api/webhooks/YOUR_ID/YOUR_TOKEN",
"min_severity": 60
},
"telegram": {
"enabled": true,
"bot_token": "YOUR_BOT_TOKEN",
"chat_id": "YOUR_CHAT_ID",
"min_severity": 70
},
"email": {
"enabled": false,
"sendgrid_api_key": "YOUR_KEY",
"from_email": "alerts@yourdomain.com",
"to_emails": ["trader@yourdomain.com"],
"min_severity": 80
}
},
"rate_limiting": {
"max_alerts_per_hour": 50,
"cooldown_same_wallet": 300
}
}
```
### Step 3: Initialize Database Schema
```sql
-- PostgreSQL schema for whale tracking
CREATE TABLE whale_transactions (
id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
tx_hash VARCHAR(66) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
chain VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
block_number BIGINT NOT NULL,
timestamp TIMESTAMP NOT NULL,
from_address VARCHAR(42) NOT NULL,
to_address VARCHAR(42) NOT NULL,
value_native NUMERIC(36, 18) NOT NULL,
value_usd NUMERIC(18, 2) NOT NULL,
token_symbol VARCHAR(20),
token_address VARCHAR(42),
transaction_type VARCHAR(20),
severity_score INTEGER,
market_impact_score INTEGER,
is_exchange_related BOOLEAN DEFAULT FALSE,
exchange_name VARCHAR(50),
created_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
INDEX idx_timestamp (timestamp DESC),
INDEX idx_chain (chain),
INDEX idx_from_address (from_address),
INDEX idx_to_address (to_address),
INDEX idx_severity (severity_score DESC)
);
CREATE TABLE whale_wallets (
id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
address VARCHAR(42) UNIQUE NOT NULL,
chain VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
label VARCHAR(100),
wallet_type VARCHAR(50),
first_seen TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
last_transaction TIMESTAMP,
total_transactions INTEGER DEFAULT 0,
total_volume_usd NUMERIC(18, 2) DEFAULT 0,
is_monitored BOOLEAN DEFAULT TRUE
);
CREATE TABLE exchange_wallets (
id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY,
address VARCHAR(42) NOT NULL,
chain VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
exchange_name VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
wallet_type VARCHAR(20),
added_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,
UNIQUE(address, chain)
);
-- TimescaleDB hypertable for time-series optimization
SELECT create_hypertable('whale_transactions', 'timestamp');
```
### Step 4: Run Whale Monitor
Execute the monitoring script:
```bash
# Start real-time monitoring (all chains)
python3 whale_monitor.py --chains ethereum,bsc,solana \
--threshold 1000000 \
--min-severity 50 \
--alerts slack,discord,telegram
# Monitor specific wallets
python3 whale_monitor.py --watch-addresses wallets.txt \
--threshold 100000
# Export alerts to webhook
python3 whale_monitor.py --webhook-url https://your-api.com/webhook \
--format json
```
### Step 5: Set Up Monitoring Dashboard
Create Grafana dashboard with Prometheus metrics:
```yaml
# prometheus.yml
scrape_configs:
- job_name: 'whale_monitor'
static_configs:
- targets: ['localhost:9090']
metrics_path: '/metrics'
scrape_interval: 10s
```

## Error Handling
| Error Type | Detection | Resolution | Prevention |
|------------|-----------|------------|------------|
| RPC connection failure | Connection timeout (30s) | Retry with exponential backoff, failover to backup RPC | Use multiple RPC providers, health checks |
| WebSocket disconnection | No new blocks for 60s | Reconnect and sync from last block | Keep-alive pings, connection monitoring |
| Price API rate limiting | HTTP 429 response | Use cached price, reduce fetch frequency | Implement tiered caching (30s/5min/1h) |
| Database connection lost | psycopg2.OperationalError | Reconnect pool, buffer alerts to disk | Connection pooling, periodic health checks |
| Alert delivery failure | HTTP 4xx/5xx from webhook | Queue for retry (3 attempts), log failure | Implement retry queue, monitor delivery rates |
| Memory overflow | Transaction buffer >10K entries | Batch process and clear buffer | Process transactions in real-time, limit buffer size |
| Invalid transaction format | Missing 'value' or 'from' field | Skip transaction, log error | Validate transaction schema before processing |
| Stale block data | Block timestamp >5min old | Resync from latest block, alert devs | Monitor block freshness, automated resync |

## Best Practices
### DO:
- ✅ Monitor multiple chains for comprehensive whale tracking
- ✅ Use WebSocket connections for real-time updates (<1s latency)
- ✅ Implement tiered alerting based on severity scores
- ✅ Cache price data (30s TTL) to reduce API calls
- ✅ Store historical data for pattern analysis
- ✅ Set up failover RPC providers for reliability
- ✅ Use TimescaleDB for time-series optimization
- ✅ Implement rate limiting to avoid alert fatigue
- ✅ Monitor your monitor (Prometheus metrics, health checks)
- ✅ Include market context in alerts (volume %, price impact)
### DON'T:
- ❌ Monitor without thresholds - generates 100K+ alerts/day
- ❌ Use HTTP polling - 15s delays make alerts useless
- ❌ Alert on every transaction - causes alert fatigue
- ❌ Ignore exchange flows - critical market sentiment indicator
- ❌ Run single RPC provider - single point of failure
- ❌ Store unlimited history - database bloat (90 days max)
- ❌ Send alerts without cooldown - spam during volatility
- ❌ Hardcode exchange wallets - exchanges rotate addresses
- ❌ Skip severity scoring - all alerts appear equal importance
- ❌ Ignore historical patterns - miss predictive signals
## Performance Considerations
- **Real-Time Processing**: WebSocket subscriptions provide <1s latency from chain to alert
- **Throughput**: Handles 10,000+ transactions/second across multiple chains
- **Database Performance**: TimescaleDB hypertables with 7-day compression reduce storage 80%
- **API Rate Limits**:
- Price API: 50 calls/min (CoinGecko free), cached 30s
- RPC: 100K calls/day (Infura), 300K (Alchemy)
- **Memory Usage**: ~2GB per chain monitored (transaction buffers, WebSocket connections)
- **Alert Latency**:
- Critical (severity 80+): <5s from transaction to Slack/Discord
- High (severity 60-79): <10s
- Medium (severity 40-59): <30s
**Optimization Tips:**
1. Use read replicas for historical queries (separate from real-time processing)
2. Partition database by day for efficient pruning
3. Implement connection pooling (10-20 connections)
4. Use Redis for hot cache (L1) if monitoring 5+ chains
5. Batch database inserts (100 transactions/batch)
## Security Considerations
- **API Key Management**: Store in environment variables or secrets manager, never commit to repo
- **RPC Provider Rotation**: Use multiple providers to avoid single vendor dependency
- **Webhook Validation**: Verify alert delivery with HMAC signatures
- **Database Access**: Read-only user for analytics queries, write user only for monitor process
- **Rate L
