An MCP server that exposes the FAOSTAT API as tools so AI assistants can query UN food and agriculture statistics. It supports data discovery, metadata lookup, rankings, report retrieval, and authentication for FAOSTAT access.
From the registry: FAOSTAT data for 245 countries: crops, trade, food security, and emissions via 21 MCP tools.
$ pip install faostat-mcphttps://pypi.org/project/faostat-mcp/$ docker run -p 6379:6379 -it redis/redis-stack:latestPlease install the `faostat-mcp` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).
Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Python 3.10+** — Python 3.10 or newer is required to run the FAOSTAT MCP server. (https://www.python.org/downloads/)
- **Install faostat-mcp** — Install the published Python package. The README recommends the PyPI/registry path over running from source. Run: `pip install faostat-mcp` (https://pypi.org/project/faostat-mcp/)
- **Create a FAOSTAT API account** — Register for a free FAOSTAT API account if you want authenticated access. Credentials can then be stored using the faostat_setup tool or supplied via environment variables. (https://www.fao.org/faostat/en/#developer-portal)
Optional prerequisites:
- Optional Redis setup — Redis is optional and only needed for shared or high-volume deployments using Redis-backed caching. Run: `docker run -p 6379:6379 -it redis/redis-stack:latest`
Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):
- command: `uvx`
- args: ["faostat-mcp"]
- optional environment variables:
- `FAOSTAT_API_TOKEN`: FAOSTAT API token. Alternative to username/password authentication. (example: `<your-api-token>`)
- `FAOSTAT_USERNAME`: FAOSTAT account username/email. Use together with FAOSTAT_PASSWORD if not using FAOSTAT_API_TOKEN. (example: `<your-faostat-username>`)
- `FAOSTAT_PASSWORD`: FAOSTAT account password. Use together with FAOSTAT_USERNAME if not using FAOSTAT_API_TOKEN. (example: `<your-faostat-password>`)
- `REDIS_HOST_IP_ADDRESS`: Redis host address for optional shared Redis caching. (example: `<your-redis-host>`)
- `REDIS_HOST_PORT_NUMBER`: Redis port for optional shared Redis caching. (example: `<your-redis-port>`)
- `REDIS_DATABASE`: Redis database number for optional shared Redis caching. (example: `<your-redis-database>`)
- `FAOSTAT_DISK_CACHE`: Set to disable SQLite disk cache on read-only or constrained filesystems. (example: `<true-or-false>`)
Note: The simplest recommended MCP config uses stdio with command `uvx` and args `["faostat-mcp"]`. Authentication can be set up after first launch using the `faostat_setup` tool, which stores credentials securely and avoids putting secrets in MCP config. The server also works when installed with pip and invoked via the `faostat-mcp` script, but the README's recommended config snippet uses `uvx`.
Add this MCP server to my current client's config in the correct format for you. If you need secrets or credentials I haven't provided, ASK me — do not invent values or leave raw placeholders. After adding it, tell me how to verify the server is connected.FAOSTAT_API_TOKENrequiredFAOSTAT API token for authenticationFAOSTAT_USERNAMErequiredFAOSTAT username for authentication with passwordFAOSTAT_PASSWORDrequiredFAOSTAT password for authentication with usernameMeta Ads MCP (Facebook + Instagram) - analyze performance, manage budgets, pause campaigns.
