MCP server for querying U.S. and global economic data from FRED, including series search, observations, metadata, category browsing, releases, and an economic snapshot. It applies FRED-side transforms and frequency aggregation, and returns results as markdown or JSON.
From the registry: FRED economic data: GDP, inflation, unemployment, rates, and 800k+ Federal Reserve time series.
Please install the `fred-economic-mcp` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).
Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js 16+** — Required to run the recommended npx-based server launch. (https://nodejs.org/)
- **Install Python 3.10+** — Required because the npx wrapper creates an isolated Python environment and installs dependencies on first launch. (https://www.python.org/downloads/)
- **Get a FRED API key** — Create a free FRED account and request an API key, then provide it via the FRED_API_KEY environment variable. (https://fredaccount.stlouisfed.org/apikeys)
Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):
- command: `npx`
- args: ["-y","fred-economic-mcp"]
- required environment variables:
- `FRED_API_KEY`: Free API key for the FRED API. (example: `<your-fred-api-key>`)
Note: Preferred install path is the npm package via npx. The server communicates locally over stdin/stdout using JSON-RPC. On first run, the npx wrapper creates an isolated Python environment and installs dependencies automatically. A global npm install and a direct Python script launch are also documented, but npx is the simplest portable option.
Add this MCP server to my current client's config in the correct format for you. If you need secrets or credentials I haven't provided, ASK me — do not invent values or leave raw placeholders. After adding it, tell me how to verify the server is connected.FRED_API_KEYrequiredFree FRED API key used to authenticate requests to the FRED APITrending hip-hop artist momentum scores across four cultural dimensions.
