An MCP server that provides AI agents a governed shared knowledge base for searching, reading, and contributing persistent instructions and cataloged knowledge across sessions and repositories. It also includes optional semantic search and an admin dashboard for monitoring, governance, and maintenance.

Prerequisites

Node.js 22 LTS or newer is required to run the published package via npx.

Choose a persistent data directory
Create or select a stable folder for the knowledge base data and set INDEX_SERVER_DIR to that path. Keep it outside editor and MCP client config directories.

Optional: Install OpenSSL for HTTPS certificate bootstrap
Required only if you want to generate a self-signed TLS certificate with --init-cert for the dashboard HTTPS setup.

Please install the `index-server` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).

Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js** — Node.js 22 LTS or newer is required to run the published package via npx.
- **Choose a persistent data directory** — Create or select a stable folder for the knowledge base data and set INDEX_SERVER_DIR to that path. Keep it outside editor and MCP client config directories.

Optional prerequisites:
- Optional: Install OpenSSL for HTTPS certificate bootstrap — Required only if you want to generate a self-signed TLS certificate with --init-cert for the dashboard HTTPS setup.

Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):

  - `INDEX_SERVER_DIR`: Path to the persistent Index Server data/instructions directory. (example: `<your-index-server-data-dir>`)
- optional environment variables:
  - `INDEX_SERVER_LOG_LEVEL`: Logging verbosity for the server. (example: `<log-level>`)
  - `INDEX_SERVER_SEMANTIC_ENABLED`: Enable semantic search. When set, the first search downloads the embedding model once. (example: `<enable-semantic-search>`)

Note: Recommended install path is the published npm package via npx. The README shows MCP client examples using stdio with npx and --dashboard. Semantic search is optional and enabled by adding INDEX_SERVER_SEMANTIC_ENABLED. Docker and source builds are available but are not the simplest portable path.

Add this MCP server to my current client's config in the correct format for you. If you need secrets or credentials I haven't provided, ASK me — do not invent values or leave raw placeholders. After adding it, tell me how to verify the server is connected.
