An MCP server that lets an AI assistant inspect a boat's Signal K data and design KIP dashboards for it. It can preview dashboards, recommend dashboard sets, and write or export KIP configurations after user approval.
From the registry: Reads a boat's Signal K data and helps an AI assistant design and install KIP dashboards.
Please install the `kip-mcp-server` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).
Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js 24 or newer** — Node.js 24+ is required because the recommended install path uses npx, which comes with Node.js. (https://nodejs.org/)
- **Have a Signal K server with KIP installed** — You need a reachable Signal K server on your boat or network, with KIP installed, for the MCP server to inspect data and design/install dashboards. (https://signalk.org)
Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):
- command: `npx`
- args: ["-y","kip-mcp-server"]
- optional environment variables:
- `SIGNALK_HOST`: Signal K host name or IP address. (example: `<your-signalk-host>`)
- `SIGNALK_PORT`: Signal K port. (example: `<your-signalk-port>`)
- `SIGNALK_TLS`: Set to true if the Signal K server uses HTTPS. (example: `<true-or-false>`)
- `SIGNALK_TOKEN`: Signal K login token used to write dashboards to the server. Not needed for read-only access or file export. Use instead of username/password. (example: `<your-signalk-token>`)
- `SIGNALK_USER`: Signal K username, used together with SIGNALK_PASSWORD for authenticated writes instead of a token. (example: `<your-signalk-username>`)
- `SIGNALK_PASSWORD`: Signal K password, used together with SIGNALK_USER for authenticated writes instead of a token. (example: `<your-signalk-password>`)
- `KIP_URL`: Override the KIP URL if it is not served from the default derived location. (example: `<your-kip-url>`)
Note: Default transport is stdio. Reading Signal K data requires no authentication. Writing dashboards to the Signal K server requires either SIGNALK_TOKEN or both SIGNALK_USER and SIGNALK_PASSWORD; otherwise the server can still export a KipConfig file for manual import. The README also describes an optional advanced HTTP-hosted mode via `npx kip-mcp-http`, but the simplest portable install path is the stdio npx command.
