An MCP server for searching The Metropolitan Museum of Art collection, listing curatorial departments, and fetching full artwork records including metadata and CC0 image URLs. It supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP transports and uses the Met's public, unauthenticated Collection API.
From the registry: MET Museum collection via MCP — 500K+ artworks, metadata, provenance, open-access images.
Please install the `met-museum-mcp-server` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).
Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js** — Node.js v24 or higher is required to use the recommended npx-based local stdio launch path. (https://nodejs.org/)
Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):
- command: `npx`
- args: ["-y","@cyanheads/met-museum-mcp-server@latest"]
- required environment variables:
- `MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE`: Transport mode for the server. Set to stdio for MCP client stdio integration. (example: `stdio`)
- optional environment variables:
- `MCP_LOG_LEVEL`: Log level for server output. Supported values: debug, info, warning, error. (example: `info`)
- `MCP_HTTP_PORT`: HTTP server port. Only relevant when using HTTP transport, not needed for stdio. (example: `<your-port>`)
- `MCP_AUTH_MODE`: Authentication mode. Supported values: none, jwt, oauth. (example: `none`)
- `LOGS_DIR`: Directory for log files (Node.js only). (example: `<your-logs-directory>`)
- `OTEL_ENABLED`: Enable OpenTelemetry instrumentation. (example: `<true-or-false>`)
- `MET_BASE_URL`: Override the Metropolitan Museum API base URL, for example when using local stubs. (example: `<your-met-api-base-url>`)
- `MET_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS`: Per-request HTTP timeout in milliseconds for calls to the Met API. (example: `<your-timeout-ms>`)
- `MET_BATCH_CONCURRENCY`: Maximum parallel fetches for met_get_object batch requests. (example: `<your-concurrency>`)
Note: A public hosted Streamable HTTP server is also available at https://met-museum.caseyjhand.com/mcp. Canonical hosted HTTP shape: url=https://met-museum.caseyjhand.com/mcp with no headers. The README also documents self-hosted HTTP mode, but only as a local start command (MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE=http MCP_HTTP_PORT=3010 bun run start:http) rather than a portable MCP client config snippet, so stdio via npx is the simplest extracted install path.
Add this MCP server to my current client's config in the correct format for you. If you need secrets or credentials I haven't provided, ASK me — do not invent values or leave raw placeholders. After adding it, tell me how to verify the server is connected.MCP server for searching Airweave collections with natural language queries.
