Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Node.js 20+** — NowAIKit requires Node.js 20 or newer. (https://nodejs.org)
- **ServiceNow instance access** — A ServiceNow instance URL and either basic auth credentials or an OAuth app. Free PDIs available at developer.servicenow.com. (https://developer.servicenow.com)
- **Install NowAIKit** — Install globally via npm (or run `npx nowaikit setup`). Run: `npm install -g nowaikit`

Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):

- required environment variables:
  - `SERVICENOW_INSTANCE_URL`: Base URL of your ServiceNow instance. (example: `https://yourinstance.service-now.com`)
  - `SERVICENOW_AUTH_METHOD`: Authentication method: basic or oauth. (example: `basic`)
- optional environment variables:
  - `SERVICENOW_BASIC_USERNAME`: Username for basic auth (required when SERVICENOW_AUTH_METHOD=basic). (example: `admin`)
  - `SERVICENOW_BASIC_PASSWORD`: Password for basic auth (required when SERVICENOW_AUTH_METHOD=basic). (example: `<your-password>`)

Note: Canonical install uses `node dist/server.js` in the README configs; npx shim also works. See docs/SERVICENOW_OAUTH_SETUP.md for OAuth alternative.
