An MCP server that wraps the OpenAQ v3 API to find air-quality monitoring stations, fetch current sensor readings, and query historical pollutant measurements. It also provides catalog lookups for parameters and country coverage, plus DuckDB-backed SQL tools for large measurement series.

Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js** — Node.js v24+ is required to use the recommended npx-based self-hosted setup. (https://nodejs.org/)
- **Get an OpenAQ API key** — A free OpenAQ v3 API key is required for the server to access the OpenAQ API. (https://explore.openaq.org/)

- `MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE`: Transport mode for the server. Use stdio for MCP client stdio integration. (example: `stdio`)
- `OPENAQ_API_KEY`: OpenAQ v3 API key sent as the X-API-Key header on every request. (example: `<your-api-key>`)
- optional environment variables:
- `OPENAQ_API_BASE_URL`: Override the OpenAQ v3 API base URL for a proxy or test mirror. (example: `<your-openaq-api-base-url>`)
- `CANVAS_PROVIDER_TYPE`: Set to duckdb to enable DataCanvas SQL tools for large measurement series; otherwise those tools remain unavailable and large series return truncated previews only. (example: `duckdb`)
- `MCP_HTTP_PORT`: Port used only when running the server in HTTP transport mode. (example: `<your-port>`)
- `MCP_AUTH_MODE`: Auth mode for the server. (example: `<none-or-jwt-or-oauth>`)
- `MCP_LOG_LEVEL`: Log level in RFC 5424 format. (example: `<your-log-level>`)
- `LOGS_DIR`: Directory for log files when supported by the runtime. (example: `<your-logs-directory>`)
Note: README also provides a public hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint at https://openaq.caseyjhand.com/mcp, which can be used without installation. Self-hosted HTTP mode is supported by setting MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE=http and starting the server separately; the README does not provide a canonical client config snippet for self-hosted HTTP beyond the hosted URL.
