An MCP server for Open Food Facts that lets clients look up packaged food products by barcode, search products with text or tag filters, compare multiple products, and browse the Open Food Facts tag taxonomy. It supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP transports.

Install & configure
Prerequisites

Please install the `openfoodfacts-mcp-server` MCP server into my current AI client (that's you).
Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Install Node.js or Bun** — Install Bun v1.3.0+ or Node.js v24+ to run the server locally. The simplest portable path in the README uses npx, which requires Node.js. (https://bun.sh/)
Canonical MCP server config (stdio transport):

- `OFF_BASE_URL`: Override the Open Food Facts API base URL, mainly for local testing against a mock server. (example: `<your-openfoodfacts-base-url>`)
- `OFF_RATE_LIMIT_PRODUCT`: Product read rate limit in requests per minute. (example: `<your-product-rate-limit>`)
- `OFF_RATE_LIMIT_SEARCH`: Search rate limit in requests per minute. (example: `<your-search-rate-limit>`)
- `MCP_HTTP_PORT`: HTTP server port when running in HTTP transport mode. (example: `<your-http-port>`)
- `MCP_AUTH_MODE`: Authentication mode: none, jwt, or oauth. (example: `<your-auth-mode>`)
- `LOGS_DIR`: Log file directory when running under Node.js. (example: `<your-logs-directory>`)
- `OTEL_ENABLED`: Enable OpenTelemetry instrumentation. (example: `<true-or-false>`)
Note: No API key is required. The README also offers a public hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint at https://openfoodfacts.caseyjhand.com/mcp and supports self-hosted HTTP mode, but the simplest portable install path is stdio via npx. For hosted HTTP use, point the client at the published MCP endpoint.

off_get_product
Fetch a packaged food product by barcode and return product details, ingredients, allergens, additives, scores, nutrition, and tags.
off_search_products
Search Open Food Facts by text query and structured filters such as category, brand, label, Nutri-Score, NOVA group, and country.
off_compare_products
Compare 2–10 products side by side by barcode, returning normalized nutrition and scoring data.
off_browse_taxonomy
Browse and search the Open Food Facts tag vocabulary for categories, labels, allergens, additives, countries, NOVA groups, and Nutri-Score grades.
