Two numbers stand out.
Context window: 200K vs 70K–120K. Claude Code delivers its full 200K context reliably (1M in beta with Opus 4.6). Developers report Cursor’s usable context drops to 70K–120K after internal truncation. For large codebases, this gap matters.
Token efficiency: 5.5x. Independent benchmarks show Claude Code uses 5.5x fewer tokens than Cursor for identical tasks. At scale, that’s a significant cost difference — even if Cursor’s per-token price is lower.
The Multi-Agent Race
February 2026 is when both tools went all-in on multi-agent.
Claude Code’s Agent Teams (research preview, February 5) let you run an orchestrator agent that assigns tasks to independent teammates. Each teammate gets its own context window but shares the project. The lead agent coordinates. Think of it as a small dev team in your terminal.
Cursor’s Cloud Agents (February 24) run on isolated VMs with actual computer use — they can open browsers, test UIs, record demo videos, and ship merge-ready PRs. Cursor says 35% of their own internal merged PRs are now created by these cloud agents.

- Work on UI/frontend where visual feedback is critical

Use both if you:

The Elephant in the Room: Lock-In
Claude Code only runs Anthropic models. Cursor supports Claude, GPT-5.3, Gemini 3 Pro, and its own Composer 1.5.
In January 2026, Anthropic started blocking third-party tools from using Claude subscription tokens. DHH called it a “terrible policy”:

Both tools are billion-dollar businesses. Both are being used by the largest companies in the world. The “which one wins” framing is probably wrong. The real answer is that the AI coding market is big enough for both — and most serious developers will end up using both.
