About the Role

3D CFD Engineer responsible for performing high-fidelity multiphysics CFD simulations to support engine and powertrain development, analyzing airpath, combustion, cooling, fuel, exhaust and lubrication systems. The role provides technical guidance to component and system engineers, develops CFD methods, and supports virtual test signoff to influence engine design and resolve development issues.

Job Description

Role

Ford Motor Company is seeking a 3D CFD Engineer to perform high-fidelity multiphysics 3D thermal/fluid CFD simulations supporting internal combustion engine (ICE) and powertrain development. The engineer will analyze system, subsystem, and component-level behaviors of engine airpath, combustion, cooling, fuel, air intake, exhaust, lubrication and related systems to quantify hardware impacts on performance, fuel consumption, emissions, NVH, and durability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform 3D thermal/fluid CFD simulations at system, subsystem, and component levels using commercial CFD software.
  • Analyze intake and exhaust port flow, EGR/PCV/purge distribution, intake/exhaust manifold performance (1D/3D), exhaust manifold HTC mapping, in-cylinder combustion effects on fuel consumption and emissions, injector targeting, catalyst brick face utilization, sensor response, fluid sloshing, and system restrictions.
  • Develop and apply CFD methods and multiphysics modeling techniques to support product development and virtual test signoff.
  • Collaborate with component and system engineers and provide technical guidance.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and combustion.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in thermal/fluid CFD simulation; experience in multiphysics modeling preferred.
  • Proficiency in common computer languages and scripting (Java, Python, shell script, MATLAB, etc.).
  • Self-directed, resilient, with excellent communication, work planning, and issue resolution skills.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Additional experience (2+ years) in automotive ICE or vehicle CFD applications.
  • Proficiency with analytical/CFD tools such as STAR-CCM+, CONVERGE, Simerics, GT-SUITE, AMEsim.
  • Vibe coding and machine learning experience (listed as a preferred skill).

Benefits

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave and new parent ramp-up programs
  • Subsidized back-up child care
  • Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement and fertility treatments
  • Vehicle discount program and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for community service
  • Generous paid holidays (including week between Christmas and New Year’s Day)
  • Paid time off with option to purchase additional vacation time

Location & Work Arrangement

  • This position is hybrid; candidates within commuting distance to a Ford hub may be required onsite four or more days per week.

Compensation

  • Salary ranges are published by grade (examples in posting): $63,480–$106,680 (grade 5); $72,480–$121,440 (grade 6); $84,480–$141,360 (grade 7); $96,720–$162,120 (grade 8).
