Role
Ashby is hiring a Design Engineer (Canada) who both designs and implements product UI/UX. This role combines visual and interaction design with frontend engineering to solve challenging design problems, expand the company design system, and ship production-quality features to a large user base.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement polished UI/UX and flows from wireframes to production.
- Expand and maintain a flexible, composable design system used across the product.
- Consult with Product Engineers on bespoke designs and information hierarchy.
- Conduct lightweight user conversations and ship prototypes to gather feedback quickly.
- Ship end-to-end features, including design, spec-writing, implementation, and iteration.
- Contribute to developer experience and tooling improvements.
Requirements
- 2+ years of continuous experience as an Engineer or a Designer for the level this posting targets (Design Engineer). Junior and Staff levels are also described in the posting.
- Strong proficiency in both design and engineering; exceptional proficiency in the discipline you practice full-time.
- Excellent visual design taste and execution; experience building components and design systems.
- Experience shipping code used by hundreds to hundreds of thousands of users.
- Ability to work with minimal prescribed process, exercise ownership, and collaborate deliberately.
Levels and Who Should Apply
- Junior Design Engineer: <=2 years industry experience; portfolio/projects showing visual taste and growing technical capability.
- Design Engineer (this posting): 2+ years continuous experience; balanced proficiency in design and engineering.
- Staff Design Engineer: substantial professional experience contributing major design systems and shipped features iterated via user feedback.
Technology Stack
Ashby’s stack includes TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL, Node.js, Postgres, Redis, and CSS. Engineers are expected to be proficient with TypeScript, React, and CSS at minimum; backend familiarity is a plus.
Interview Process
- Intro call with the hiring leader (30m, live) with screen-share of work samples.
- Second round: either a technical screen (1h, live) or a design take-home (~3h asynchronous + 30m live).
- Final stage: three interviews including a deep dive into past design system/project work and either design system interview or the technical screen/take-home.
- No leetcode or whiteboard exercises; emphasis on past work, pair programming, and collaborative design/spec writing.
