Engineer Manager (People & Delivery Leader)
Supports an AI-enabled development environment and rapid iterative delivery; focuses on developer experience and tooling adoption but does not explicitly require vibe coding.
About the Role
Engineering Manager responsible for leading people, delivery, and team health across multiple product development teams. The role focuses on building high-performing teams, improving developer experience and cycle time, and ensuring predictable delivery of high-quality software while partnering with Product, Principal Engineers, and the VP of Engineering in an AI-enabled environment.
Job Description
Role
The Engineering Manager leads people, delivery, and team health across multiple product development teams. The primary mission is to build high-performing teams, create a culture of continuous improvement, reduce cycle time, and ensure predictable delivery of high-quality software. The role emphasizes coaching, organizing and sequencing work, removing friction, and enabling engineers rather than being the deepest technical expert.
Key Responsibilities
-
People Leadership & Team Health
- Coach engineers on ownership, collaboration, communication, and growth.
- Conduct regular 1:1s focused on development, clarity, and wellbeing.
- Create a psychologically safe, high-trust culture and grow team capability through feedback and strong engineering practices.
-
Delivery & Execution Ownership
- Own end-to-end delivery: planning, execution, and reliable shipping of work.
- Establish predictable team rhythms (planning, standups, reviews, retros).
- Prioritize, scope, and sequence work; surface risks early and propose mitigations.
- Continuously reduce cycle time and eliminate systemic blockers.
-
Partnership With Product & Principals
- Translate product objectives into clear engineering plans and maintain alignment on priorities and trade-offs.
- Lean on Principal Engineers for deep technical decisions and ensure teams follow shared architectural patterns.
-
Developer Experience & Team Efficiency
- Own developer experience: tooling, process, friction points, and quality of life.
- Identify and remove systemic blockers (slow CI, unclear processes, brittle testing).
- Champion continuous learning and adoption of modern engineering practices.
-
Light Technical Contribution & Release Coordination
- Participate in code reviews and make small, high-leverage IC contributions when needed.
- Partner with Release & Ops to ensure deployments are safe and supportable and that incidents lead to systemic improvements.
-
Leadership & Communication
- Provide clear updates to VP Engineering and Product, advocate for teams, and represent engineering in cross-functional discussions.
Requirements
Required
- Strong background in technology, software delivery, or engineering-adjacent fields.
- Experience leading or coordinating engineering work (team lead, TPM, EM, Sr Engineer, etc.).
- Ability to understand system designs, ask the right technical questions, and partner with Principal Engineers.
- Strong delivery and project leadership experience.
Preferred
- Prior experience as a software engineer (any language).
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or modern web application architecture.
- Experience working with AWS or similar cloud platforms.
Success Measures (12-Month View)
- Predictable Delivery: commitments met with transparency and few surprises; healthy, achievable roadmap.
- Quality & Reliability: decline in incidents and regressions with fixes addressing systemic causes.
- Developer Experience: improved cycle and lead time; reduced daily friction; consistent adoption of shared engineering patterns.
- People & Growth: clear engineer progression, strong team health and low regrettable attrition.
- Cross-Functional Trust: Product, Release, and Principal Engineers view the EM as reliable, proactive, and accountable.
