Forward Deployed Engineer - India

Role

Forward Deployed Engineer (India) focused on migrations: deliver production-grade data migrations, integrations, and automations across APAC. This is a hands-on engineering role responsible for feasibility assessment, implementation, testing, production rollout, reconciliation, reporting, and operational handoff. As a founding engineer in India, you will help build regional migration infrastructure, standards, and reusable tooling.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute the technical implementation after solution architecture and scope are defined by regional FDEs.
• Apply a repeatable migration lifecycle: source inventory, sampling, scope decisions, transformation design, pilot/dry-run, UAT, cutover, reconciliation, remediation, hypercare, and handoff.
• Translate requirements into technical designs, implementation plans, test strategies, runbooks, and delivery estimates.
• Build production-quality migration utilities, backend services, data pipelines, integrations, and automations using Python, SQL, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
• Investigate source-system behavior, data quality, permissions, rate limits, authentication constraints, and edge cases; recommend practical solutions.
• Design migrations for reliability, scale, security, observability, idempotency, failure recovery, and safe reruns.
• Follow least-privilege access and approved handling procedures; do not store customer data in unmanaged systems and escalate privacy/security/sovereignty concerns.
• Build validation and reconciliation frameworks that provide evidence of migration completeness, accuracy, and exceptions.
• Debug failures across application code, infrastructure, customer data, third-party systems, and the Notion platform; drive issues to resolution.
• Manage multiple implementation workstreams, dependencies, and priorities; communicate scope, progress, risks, and trade-offs.
• Document assumptions, decisions, validation evidence, and customer acceptance criteria in the agreed shared workspace.
• Convert repeated delivery patterns into reusable components, automation, documentation, and playbooks.
• Bring field learnings back to Product and Engineering as actionable platform feedback.

Requirements

• 3 to 6 years of hands-on experience in backend, data, integration, implementation, technical consulting, or solutions engineering roles.
• Strong hands-on Python development experience.
• Working experience with Node.js, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
• Strong SQL skills and solid understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and data transformation.
• Experience with REST APIs, JSON, authentication, webhooks, and system integrations.
• Experience owning production migrations or technical implementations through mapping, transformation, testing, rollout, validation, and handoff.
• Experience taking technical problems from requirements through development, testing, deployment, and production operation.
• Experience with Git, code review, automated testing, release practices, and production deployment.
• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills across code, data, infrastructure, and external systems.
• Evidence of working on production systems (not only prototypes).
• Clear written and verbal English communication for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• High agency and ownership; comfortable working with incomplete information and escalating options when needed.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, job orchestration, or infrastructure automation.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Familiarity with message queues, event-driven systems, retries, concurrency, and rate limits.
• Experience with monitoring, logging, alerting, or other observability tools.
• Experience with enterprise SaaS applications, professional services, or large-scale customer implementations and migrating large volumes of content.
• Experience with AI/LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation, evaluation frameworks, or agentic workflows.
• Familiarity with MCP, Notion Workers, tool calling, Custom Agents, or similar extensibility platforms.
• Experience working with distributed global or APAC teams.

What Success Looks Like

• First 90 days: learn Notion’s migration ecosystem and APAC delivery model, establish working rhythm with regional FDEs, contribute to at least one production migration, and leave clear technical documentation and runbooks.
• First 6 months: independently own production migration workstreams, deliver measurable improvements in turnaround/quality/cost, establish repeatable quality controls and observability patterns for the India team, and turn repeated patterns into reusable tools.

Location & Working Model

• Based in Hyderabad, India. Team works from the office on Anchor Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The role expects working alongside the team on those days.
