iText to PDF Migration - Java Spring Boot code migration
Uses Vibe coding tools (Cursor, Claude) and requires keeping the existing Vibe coding style intact.
About the Role
Migrate a set of Java Spring Boot operational reports from iText to an open-source PDF library (e.g., Apache PDFBox) while preserving existing layout, calculations, branding, and the current Vibe coding style. Deliver clean, well-documented, iText-free code, unit tests, and sample PDFs demonstrating a dynamic table of contents and parameter-driven data filtering.
Job Description
Role
Migrate a collection of Java-based operational reports that currently use iText so they instead use an open-source PDF library (Apache PDFBox or equivalent) within a Java Spring Boot codebase. Maintain the existing Vibe coding style and ensure the migrated reports produce PDFs that match the previous outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Replace all iText dependencies with Apache PDFBox (or another open-source PDF library) across the provided reports.
- Preserve layout, calculations, branding, and output fidelity for each report.
- Implement and verify a runtime-generated dynamic table of contents for the reports.
- Ensure data filtering options passed as parameters are applied and reflected in the generated PDFs.
- Provide clean, well-documented source code and remove iText build artifacts and dependencies.
- Deliver a small set of sample PDFs demonstrating the required features and a short checklist of passing unit tests.
Requirements
- Strong Java and Spring Boot experience (codebase will be Java-based).
- Experience migrating or replacing PDF libraries (iText → Apache PDFBox or equivalent).
- Ability to reproduce existing PDF layouts exactly (or improve them) and validate via unit tests.
- Produce well-documented, maintainable code and build artifacts free of iText.
- Use one of the leading Vibe coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude code) and keep the existing Vibe coding style intact.
Deliverables
- Source code refactored to remove all iText dependencies and use Apache PDFBox or an equivalent open-source library.
- Unit tests or a provided checklist of tests; all tests must pass.
- A small set of sample PDFs demonstrating: (a) runtime dynamic table of contents and (b) parameter-driven data filtering.
- Build files and instructions to compile each report without errors.
- Inline and external documentation explaining changes and usage.
Acceptance Criteria
- Each migrated report compiles and runs without errors.
- Provided tests pass.
- Generated PDFs look identical to (or better than) the originals and demonstrate the required features.
What You’ll Receive
- Current iText source code for the reports.
- Sample data sets.
- A short checklist of unit tests to verify feature parity.
Logistics
- Work location: Remote
- Tools: Candidate should be prepared to use Vibe coding tools such as Cursor or Claude code during the work.
