Explicitly requires vibe coding skills—rapid AI-assisted prototyping with copilots/code chat and short-iteration workflows.
About the Role
Junior AI/ML Engineer role to prototype and deliver generative AI/ML features that accelerate engineering workflows. On-site in San Diego, the role emphasizes rapid AI-assisted iteration (“vibe coding”), building LLM features (search, summarization, Q&A), and integrating models into APIs and deployment pipelines.
Job Description
Role
Volt is hiring a Junior AI/ML Engineer based at the San Diego facility to prototype and deliver generative AI and ML features that speed up engineering workflows and advance the company’s digital platform. The position emphasizes “vibe coding”: rapid, AI-assisted iteration with disciplined practices such as small pull requests, quick feedback, and tests to keep prototypes safe as they mature.
Key Responsibilities
- Rapid prototyping using AI-assisted coding tools, notebooks, and lightweight services; iterate in short cycles with frequent demos and feedback.
- Implement and test LLM-driven features such as search, summarization, and Q&A over documents/logs under senior guidance.
- Package models into APIs and pipelines, add unit and integration tests, and support deployment workflows.
- Collaborate using Git and a small-PR workflow; participate in code reviews and maintain test coverage and evaluation practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 1–2 years of experience (including internships, co-ops, research, or early-career roles) building software, data pipelines, or ML prototypes.
- Proficiency in Python and common data tools (Pandas, NumPy); solid baseline software engineering practices (testing, readable code).
- ML fundamentals and strong interest in generative AI/LLMs, including evaluation and understanding of failure modes and responsible use.
- Exposure to PyTorch or TensorFlow, and modern LLM tooling (e.g., Transformers, RAG/vector search libraries).
- Comfortable using Git and collaborating via pull requests.
Preferred
- Experience with AI-assisted prototyping (copilots/code chat) and fast iteration backed by tests and reviews.
- Good AI-tool hygiene: prompt writing, critical review of diffs, and protecting sensitive data.
- Nice to have: experience with RAG/embeddings and basic cloud or CI/CD exposure.
Compensation, Schedule, and Location
- Pay Rate: $35.00 - $48.00 per hour (DOE).
- Employment: Full-time, long-term temporary.
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm.
- Location: On-site at Volt’s San Diego facility.
Benefits
Health, dental, and vision insurance; term life; short-term disability; AD&D; 401(k); sick time and other paid leaves as required by law; and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
