The role focuses on improving thermal management, energy efficiency, and system resilience through simulation, design iteration, and multidisciplinary coordination.
Job Description
Role
SSOE is hiring a Mechanical Engineer with a focus on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to support HVAC design and optimization for mission-critical data centers. The position blends detailed mechanical/HVAC system design with CFD and thermal modeling to deliver energy-efficient, resilient facilities.
AI and Innovation
The team provides responsible access to industry-leading AI Large Language Models and vibe-coding platforms, with training and support to integrate AI into workflows for productivity, creativity, and automation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed engineering designs, technical project plans, specifications, drawings, and 3D models that meet client requirements and industry standards.
- Perform CFD simulations (using Cadence tools such as Fidelity/Pointwise or similar) to analyze airflow, temperature distribution, pressure gradients, and cooling effectiveness in data center environments.
- Design and optimize HVAC systems including CRAH/CRAC units, chillers, cooling towers, containment systems, ductwork, and ventilation strategies.
- Conduct mechanical calculations: cooling load analysis, airflow distribution, pressure drop, pump head, and energy efficiency assessments.
- Interpret CFD results to recommend design improvements for thermal management, redundancy, and PUE reduction.
- Collaborate with electrical, structural, architectural, and controls teams to integrate mechanical systems into coordinated design packages.
- Participate in design reviews and ensure deliverables meet QA/QC standards and project milestones.
- Perform site visits and field verifications, manage RFIs and submittals, and support construction and commissioning activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited) or related discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in mechanical/HVAC design, preferably in data centers or mission-critical facilities.
- Hands-on experience with CFD modeling tools, including Cadence software.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, chillers, air distribution, cooling strategies, and controls.
- Knowledge of ASHRAE guidelines (especially TC 9.9) and applicable building codes.
- Ability to translate simulation data into actionable engineering decisions and strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or PE in progress.
- Experience with Navisworks, PIPE-FLO, or similar hydraulic modeling tools.
- Familiarity with data center standards (Uptime Institute, TIA-942).
- Experience with energy modeling, sustainability strategies, and liquid cooling technologies.
- Ability to work US hours of operation.
Additional Perks
- Flexible and hybrid work options (role-dependent).
- Learning and development support, including certification reimbursement (project dependent).
- Employee engagement initiatives, clubs, and a collaborative culture.
