The Practice Customer Engineer, Applied AI will serve as a technical lead for conversational AI engagements with public sector customers, designing cloud-native, scalable Generative AI solutions, building proofs-of-concept, and partnering with sales to present solutions to technical and executive stakeholders.

Role
As a Practice Customer Engineer, Applied AI (Google Public Sector), you will provide technical expertise in Conversational AI and customer experience to accelerate Google Cloud adoption. You will design resilient, scalable AI architectures, lead proofs-of-concept and MVP development, and act as a subject matter expert with sales and product teams to demonstrate business value to technical and executive audiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to prospective and existing customers, explaining technical features and designing cloud-based architectures.
- Provide technical guidance on integrating AI solutions with enterprise data stacks and third-party tooling (e.g., CRM, ticketing, telephony).
- Lead rapid development of PoCs and MVPs to demonstrate Google Cloud solutions; troubleshoot technical roadblocks and recommend end-to-end integration strategies.
- Collaborate with product management and engineering to prioritize customer-driven solutions and share AI expertise through briefings and advocacy.
- Present the business value of Applied AI solutions to executive leaders and represent Google Cloud at industry events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum 6 years of experience designing cloud-native, enterprise-grade technical architecture in customer-facing or support roles.
- Experience with Conversational AI technologies, including designing conversational flows/agents and operating Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech systems.
- Experience building or leveraging AI solutions: ML APIs, prompting, agent tooling, evaluation frameworks, and embedding modern AI frameworks into demos.
- Experience engaging with and presenting to both technical stakeholders and executive leadership.
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building conversational applications and integrating with third-party tooling (CRM, ticketing, telephony platforms).
- Coding experience in Java, C++, or Python and experience with vibe coding.
- Familiarity with large language models (LLMs), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), machine learning templates, and document/image AI.
- Understanding of modern development methodologies and application performance tuning.
Compensation & Locations
- US base salary range (full-time): $127,000 - $184,000 (base only; plus bonus, equity, and benefits). Individual pay varies by role, level, and location.
- Preferred work locations include Reston, VA; Boulder, CO; Sunnyvale, CA; Washington, D.C.; Chicago, IL; New York, NY.
