About the Role

Prototype and ship production-ready interfaces in code, collaborate with product and engineering, and help define product taste, design systems, and developer workflows.
Job Description
Role
Fiveonefour Labs is hiring a Principal Technical Designer (also called Technical Designer / Design Engineer / UX Engineer) to lead developer-facing product UX. This hands-on role sits at the intersection of design and frontend engineering: you will prototype in code, iterate rapidly from low- to high-fidelity, and deliver production-ready UI and programmatic interfaces (APIs/CLI) for both an open-source framework (MooseStack) and a commercial hosting platform. You’ll report to the CPO or CTO and work closely with product management, product marketing, core engineering, and the developer community.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive exceptional developer experiences across product and company touchpoints.
- Shape product strategy with a developer-first perspective and represent user needs.
- Conduct high-velocity product and design discovery and validation with users.
- Capture flows and iterate through low- to high-fidelity designs; build working prototypes and MVPs.
- Prototype and implement designs in code, skipping traditional design tools where it accelerates outcomes.
- Drive the visual and interaction design taste of the product and company; own design systems and component work.
- Collaborate closely with product and engineering to move UI/UX/DX decisions from idea to shipped product.
- Leverage AI tooling and copilots to accelerate workflows and prototyping.
- Mentor and potentially lead other designers as the team grows.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience as a technical-leaning designer and/or design-leaning developer.
- Portfolio demonstrating beautiful, intuitive, and innovative features/products you’ve shipped.
- Strong visual design aesthetic and UI/UX skills; able to create, review, and self-approve designs.
- Strong software prototyping skills and experience delivering end-to-end, scalable, accessible features.
- Comfort and competency with design and dev tools; deep expertise in either design tooling or dev tooling (or both).
- Experience running user-facing discovery and validation.
- Very nice-to-have: experience designing/building developer tools.
Tools & Context
You will work on both open-source and commercial product surfaces, collaborate with a small remote-first team, and be expected to iterate quickly in a startup environment. The hiring manager emphasizes coaching, long-term career development, and high-velocity, high-quality delivery.
