About the Role

3D CFD Engineer role at Ford focused on high-fidelity multiphysics simulations to support engine and powertrain development. You will run 3D thermal/fluid CFD studies, collaborate with system and component engineers, and develop CFD methods to quantify hardware impacts and support virtual test signoff.

Job Description

Role

Ford is seeking a 3D CFD Engineer to perform high-fidelity multiphysics simulations supporting internal combustion engine and powertrain development. The role focuses on thermal/fluid CFD at system, subsystem, and component levels to evaluate engine airpath, combustion, cooling, fuel, intake/exhaust, lubrication, and related systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform 3D thermal/fluid CFD simulations using commercial CFD software at system, subsystem, and component levels of ICEs.
  • Analyze intake and exhaust port flow, EGR/PCV distribution, 1D/3D manifold performance, exhaust manifold HTC map generation, in-cylinder combustion, fuel injector targeting, catalyst utilization, UEGO sensor response, oil pan dynamics, and tank sloshing.
  • Develop and apply CFD methods and multiphysics modeling to support product development and virtual test signoff.
  • Work with component and system engineers to provide technical guidance and address issues during engine development.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 2+ years experience in automotive ICE or vehicle CFD applications and 2+ years minimum in thermal/fluid CFD simulation; multiphysics modeling preferred.
  • Proficient in use of CONVERGE for engine combustion simulation and a strong understanding of physical dyno test results.
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and combustion.
  • Strong communication skills, self-directed, confident, resilient, with excellent work planning and issue resolution skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with tools such as STAR-CCM+, Simerics, GT-SUITE, AMEsim.
  • Proficiency in common programming/scripting languages (Java, Python, shell script, MATLAB).
  • Vibe coding and machine learning experience noted as a plus.

Compensation & Location

  • Salary grade 5 to salary grade 8, range: $63,480 - $162,120 (final grade and base salary determined by skills and experience).
  • Hybrid position; candidates within commuting distance to a Ford hub may be required onsite four or more days per week.
