Senior Layout Designer / Layout Engineer
Explicitly mentions vibe-coding platforms and LLMs; uses AI tools as part of core workflows to boost productivity.
About the Role
Lead the design and coordination of complex process equipment layouts for semiconductor and high-tech manufacturing facilities, delivering constructible, code-compliant solutions that meet schedule, safety, and quality goals. Serve as the primary technical contact for project stakeholders and mentor junior designers while managing layout development from supplier drawings through construction turnover.
Job Description
Role
Senior Layout Designer / Layout Engineer responsible for leading planning and coordination of production facility and equipment layouts for semiconductor fabrication and other high-tech manufacturing projects. The role focuses on producing constructible, code-compliant layouts, resolving interface conflicts, and supporting project schedules and safety objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead planning of production facilities and equipment layouts to optimize space and resolve process-flow constraints.
- Interpret supplier equipment drawings and establish standards for tool CAD blocks (2D/3D) and Revit RFAs developed from supplier drawings.
- Develop manufacturing process layouts for greenfield and retrofit spaces based on client tool quantities and priorities.
- Perform and review design calculations, routing evaluations, and technical assessments for utilities, support systems, and equipment interfaces.
- Prepare and review drawings, models, and documentation for tool connections, equipment clearances, utility routing, and service access.
- Coordinate with project managers, discipline leads, clients, vendors, and contractors to resolve design requirements and installation constraints across project phases.
- Represent the layout discipline in design reviews, workshops, and client meetings; manage revisions and maintain alignment with scope, budget, and schedule.
- Conduct site walks to verify field conditions, assess utility tie-ins, and identify clashes or scope gaps.
- Lead risk identification and mitigation for schedule, sequencing, safety, access, and operational continuity in active production facilities.
- Manage package turnover including as-built information, redlines, closeout comments, and construction support documentation.
- Ensure compliance with client safety protocols, cleanroom requirements, contamination control, and applicable codes (National Fire Code, National Electrical Code).
- Mentor junior engineers and designers and support technical development within the team.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent layout experience.
- Approximately 7 to 10+ years of relevant experience supporting semiconductor, high-tech, cleanroom, tool install, or process equipment installation projects.
- Deep understanding of layout philosophies (product line, process layout, cellular manufacturing, densepack vs flexible layouts).
- Strong understanding of tool hookup design, subfab rack and lateral systems, utility coordination, and facility modification in semiconductor fabs.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical coordination and drawing review with constructability, safety, and code compliance focus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and client-facing presentation skills.
- Familiarity with Automated Material Handling systems.
- Proficient with AutoCAD; proficiency with Revit is desirable. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated problem solving, engineering judgment, and ownership of technical issues. Experience mentoring or supervising designers and junior engineers.
