Job Description
Role
Ashby is hiring a Staff Design Engineer (EU) who both designs and codes. The role owns UI/UX and visual execution for complex product surfaces, expands and improves the in-house design system, and implements production-ready features while iterating quickly based on user and customer feedback.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement UI/UX features end-to-end, from wireframes and visual design to production code.
- Expand, maintain, and improve the company design system and a library of flexible, composable components.
- Collaborate with Product Engineers, Designers, and PMs to influence information hierarchy, scannability, and interaction design.
- Talk with customers and internal stakeholders to gather feedback, validate designs, and iterate rapidly.
- Ship high-quality changes frequently and use data/feedback to prioritize incremental improvements.
- Contribute to team practices: pair programming, design system specs, and cross-functional problem solving.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience practicing design engineering: making major contributions to a design system and designing and implementing features used by hundreds or more users.
- Staff-level experience in this posting: history of end-to-end ownership and delivering impactful UI/UX at scale.
- Strong proficiency with TypeScript, React, and CSS; backend familiarity is a plus to reduce coordination overhead.
- Excellent visual design taste and the ability to execute high-fidelity UI work.
- Comfortable working with minimal process, owning project delivery, and iterating quickly with user feedback.
- Experience with customer-facing product work, wireframing, and turning designs into polished interfaces.
Tech stack
TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, Redis, CSS. Familiarity with modern CI/CD and AI-assisted developer tooling is part of the engineering environment.
Interview process
- Intro call (30m) with the hiring lead; be prepared to screen-share work.
- Second round: either a 1h technical screen or a ~3h design take-home plus a short live review.
- Final round: three interviews (deep dive into a past design system/project, a design system interview, and a technical/design exercise) totaling ~3h live.
- Process focuses on past projects, pair programming, and collaborative spec-writing; no leetcode/whiteboard exercises.
What to expect in your first three months
- Fast onboarding with a scripted dev environment setup and a day-one product change. Progressive project scope with 30/60/90-day reviews and close pairing support.
Culture
- Minimal process with high ownership: engineers research problems, write specs, build wireframes, and implement solutions end-to-end.
- Deliberate communication, infrequent meetings, and regular in-person meetups (at least twice a year) with local meetup budgets.
- Investment in developer experience, fast CI/CD, and AI-powered tools to increase leverage.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity
- 10-year exercise window for stock options
- Unlimited PTO (actively encouraged)
- Minimum 12 weeks fully paid parental leave (may be longer outside the US)
- Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget
- $100/month education budget (with manager approval for larger items like conferences)
- Top-tier health insurance for US employees with 100% of premiums covered; high-quality supplemental health coverage for other countries, fully covered
Compensation
- Reported range: €141K - €226K
