Staff Product Design Engineer

Role

Staff Product Design Engineer responsible for starting and advancing new hardware-based AI initiatives in healthcare. The role requires hands-on prototyping, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and the ability to move concepts through the design cycle in a low-headcount environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Conceptualize, design, and fabricate functional physical prototypes with emphasis on integration with AI and Verily’s health platform.
• Work in a scrappy, small-team environment where concept success directly affects growth.
• Take on higher-complexity projects and progress them through the design cycle using a leveraged model.
• Build at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering; collaborate closely with electrical and firmware engineers.
• Write prototype software (including “vibe-coding”) as needed to bring prototypes to life.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field with at least 10 years of industry experience.
• Ability to perform as the sole mechanical engineer in a very small team.
• Experience with a variety of rapid prototyping processes to build functional physical prototypes.
• Experience with SolidWorks CAD and creating engineering drawings for outside fabrication.
• Experience architecting electronic devices and applying DFM/DFA; design for processes such as injection molding, machining, metal stamping, laser welding.

Preferred Qualifications

• MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field with at least 8 years of experience.
• Early-stage startup experience in a technical leadership role.
• Experience developing health and wellness devices; regulated medical device experience is a plus.
• Track record of concept generation and new product exploration and development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with scientists and engineers across disciplines.

Compensation

• US base salary range: $177,000 - $265,500 (base only) + bonus + benefits. Exact pay depends on location, skills, experience, and education.
