Install & configure
Prerequisites

Required prerequisites (do these first if not already done):
- **Get a Finnhub API key** — Create a free Finnhub API key. This key is required for the server to start and access Finnhub data. (https://finnhub.io/register)
Optional prerequisites:
- Install Node.js or Bun — Install Bun v1.3.0+ or Node.js v24+ to run the server. The simplest portable path in the README uses npx, so Node.js is sufficient. (https://bun.sh/)

- `MCP_LOG_LEVEL`: Log level for server logging. (example: `info`)
- `FINNHUB_BASE_URL`: Override the Finnhub REST API base URL, for example when using a proxy or local testing setup. (example: `<your-finnhub-base-url>`)
- `MCP_HTTP_PORT`: Port used when running the server in HTTP mode. (example: `<your-http-port>`)
- `MCP_HTTP_ENDPOINT_PATH`: Endpoint path used when running the server in HTTP mode. (example: `<your-http-endpoint-path>`)
- `MCP_AUTH_MODE`: Authentication mode for the MCP server: none, jwt, or oauth. (example: `<your-auth-mode>`)
- `STORAGE_PROVIDER_TYPE`: Storage backend type: in-memory, filesystem, supabase, or cloudflare-kv/r2/d1. (example: `<your-storage-provider-type>`)
- `OTEL_ENABLED`: Enable OpenTelemetry instrumentation. (example: `<true-or-false>`)
Note: The README also supports Streamable HTTP transport, but the simplest portable MCP client configuration shown is stdio via npx. For HTTP mode, the server is started separately with MCP_TRANSPORT_TYPE=http and listens at <your-http-endpoint>/mcp by default using MCP_HTTP_PORT and MCP_HTTP_ENDPOINT_PATH.
